Amritsar, October 1, 2026: A delegation of the Amritsar District Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ADCCI), led by President Saurabh Kapoor and Honorary General Secretary Vikas Sarpal, held a high-level meeting with Sunil J. Singhvi, Chairman of the National Traders' Welfare Board. The delegation presented a detailed strategic memorandum on the ground-level challenges facing industry in Amritsar and the border belt, its export potential, and the steps needed to speed up overall economic growth in the region.
Saurabh Kapoor and Vikas Sarpal told the Chairman that, because of its location next to the international border, Amritsar's industry has faced geographic, logistical and policy challenges for decades. They stressed that building a strong industrial base in the border region matters for more than the economy alone. It is essential for lasting peace, job creation and local opportunities for young people, as well as for national security and regional stability. If these practical, time-bound suggestions are implemented, Amritsar can emerge as a major manufacturing, investment and export centre for the whole of North India.
The memorandum set out four key priorities:
- Develop Amritsar as a dedicated Export & Logistics Hub: Use Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, the road and rail network, and the city's proximity to the border to establish Amritsar as North India's leading export gateway. Strengthen cargo handling, warehousing, cold chain, container depots and other logistics facilities.
- Modernise industrial infrastructure and create new industrial zones: Upgrade existing focal points and industrial areas with proper roads, drainage, uninterrupted power supply, waste management, street lighting and modern fire-fighting systems. Identify land for new industrial parks with ready-to-use, plug-and-play facilities to attract MSMEs and large investments.
- Integrated Export Facilitation Centre and export clusters: Set up a common facilitation centre in Amritsar where MSMEs can access DGFT services, customs clearance, international packaging, quality standards and global market linkages under one roof. Create special export clusters for the city's traditional and emerging sectors: textiles, handicrafts, food processing, engineering goods, and furniture & home décor.
- Industry–government coordination and grievance redressal: Introduce a transparent, accountable grievance-tracking system for the quick resolution of policy, administrative and infrastructure issues faced by industry. Launch industry-driven skilling programmes based on the real technical and manpower needs of local units, so that young people get industry-ready jobs and businesses get skilled workers.
Chairman Sunil J. Singhvi appreciated ADCCI's vision and assured the delegation that positive and concrete steps would be taken on these points for the economic revival of the border region and to strengthen Amritsar's industries.
