Udyam Registration Made Simple: A Guide for Amritsar’s MSMEs

Micro, small and medium enterprises make up the backbone of Amritsar’s economy, yet many still have not registered on the government’s Udyam portal. Registration is free and fully online, and it opens the door to a wide range of government benefits. Here is a simple guide from ADCCI. What is Udyam Registration? Udyam Registration is the official registration for MSMEs under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Once registered, your enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate that serve as proof of MSME status. Who counts as an MSME? Enterprises are classified by investment in plant and machinery (or equipment) and annual turnover. Under the revised limits: Micro: investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore Small: investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore Medium: investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore Limits are revised from time to time. Always check the latest figures on the official Udyam portal. Why register? Easier access to collateral-free loans and priority-sector lending Protection against delayed payments from buyers under the MSMED Act Eligibility for government schemes, subsidies and procurement preferences Concessions on certain fees, such as for trademarks and patents Recognition when applying for tenders, export support and cluster programmes How to register, step by step Visit the official portal at udyamregistration.gov.in. Registration is free, so avoid agents who charge for it. Enter the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner or director, and verify it with an OTP. Provide the PAN of the enterprise. Investment and turnover details are fetched automatically from the income tax and GST systems. Fill in business details: name, address, bank account, activity (manufacturing or services) and NIC code. Submit and verify with a final OTP. Your Udyam Registration Number and e-certificate will be issued online. From Phulkari to Precision Parts: The Sectors Powering Amritsar’s Economy

Amritsar’s economy is far more varied than most people realise. Alongside the world-famous tourism and food culture, the city is home to thousands of textile units, handicraft workshops, food processors and engineering firms. ADCCI sees these sectors as the foundation for Amritsar’s growth as an export centre. 1. Textiles and woollens Amritsar has a long history in textiles, from shawls, blankets and woollens to traditional phulkari embroidery. Many units are family-run MSMEs with generations of skill behind them. With better access to design, quality certification and buyers abroad, this sector can compete strongly in global markets. 2. Handicrafts Phulkari, juttis, woodwork and other Punjabi crafts carry a strong cultural identity that international buyers value. What artisans often lack is packaging, branding and a route to market. Export clusters and buyer-seller meets can close that gap. 3. Food processing Punjab is India’s food bowl, and Amritsar is famous for products such as papad, warian, pickles and spices. Processed and packaged foods have strong demand among the Indian diaspora and beyond. Cold-chain capacity and food-safety certification are the key enablers. 4. Engineering goods and auto parts Amritsar’s small and medium engineering units make machine parts, tools, agricultural equipment and components that supply industries across the country. Modern infrastructure in industrial areas, reliable power and skilled manpower will decide how fast this sector grows. 5. Furniture and home décor A growing segment, furniture and home décor products from the region have potential in both domestic retail and export markets, especially when combined with traditional craftsmanship. How ADCCI is supporting these sectors Pushing for dedicated export clusters for each of these sectors Seeking an Integrated Export Facilitation Centre in Amritsar Organising buyer-seller meets and interactions with foreign delegations Working with colleges and institutes on industry-driven skilling If your business belongs to one of these sectors, ADCCI wants to hear from you. Join the Chamber and help shape the support your industry needs.

Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar, at night

Why Amritsar Can Become North India’s Next Export & Logistics Hub

Amritsar sits at a rare crossroads: an international airport, a major national highway corridor, a strong rail network, and the Attari Integrated Check Post, a key land route for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia. Yet for decades, the city’s industry has had to work around the very geography that should be its biggest advantage. ADCCI believes it is time to turn that around. The opportunity Few cities in North India combine so many trade routes in one place. With the right infrastructure, goods made in Amritsar and across Punjab could move to global markets faster and at lower cost than through distant ports and air hubs. Air cargo: Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport connects the city directly to the Middle East, Central Asia and beyond, which is ideal for high-value and perishable exports. Road and rail: National highway and rail links connect Amritsar to Delhi, the dedicated freight corridors and the western ports. Border trade: The Integrated Check Post at Attari gives the region a natural land gateway for trade. What is holding industry back Being a border district brings its own challenges. Units here face higher logistics costs, limited cargo handling and cold-chain capacity, and a shortage of container and warehousing facilities. Many exporters still route their goods through Delhi or Mumbai, which adds time and cost and makes them less competitive. What ADCCI is asking for In its memorandum to Sunil J. Singhvi, Chairman of the National Traders’ Welfare Board, ADCCI proposed developing Amritsar as a dedicated export and logistics hub, with: stronger air-cargo handling and cold-chain facilities at the airport modern warehousing and an inland container depot an Integrated Export Facilitation Centre offering DGFT services, customs clearance, packaging and quality support under one roof dedicated export clusters for textiles, handicrafts, food processing, engineering goods and furniture Why it matters beyond business A strong industrial base in the border belt means local jobs for young people, investment that stays in the region, and greater economic stability. In that sense, building Amritsar’s logistics capacity is as much about regional development as it is about trade. Have a logistics or export challenge?
